Soybean Commodity Surveys: 2009 - 2024
Soybeans are a major crop in Kentucky, with the greatest production in western Kentucky. In 2016, soybean production was at a record high (89 million bushels) for the fourth year in a row (2012, 2014, and 2016 statistics: www.kyagr.com). Soybean production in 2017 was at a record high for the fifth year in a row. There were 102.8 million bushels of soybeans produced with a value over $992.2 million. The annual contribution of soybean production to Kentucky’s economy included over 9,600 jobs, $1.48 billion in output (value of goods and services) and $582.6 million in GDP (value-added). (Data from NASS and data prepared by Community and Economic Development Initiative of Kentucky). Soybean acreage in 2022 was up 150,000 acres from the previous year (USDA NASS). In 2023, soybean planted area is expected to total 1.90 million acres (USDA NASS). The importance of the soybean industry in Kentucky highlights the need for a survey focused on pests in this system.
