Soybeans are a major crop in Kentucky.  In 2006 soybeans were listed as the 5th top agricultural commodity in the state with 1.3 million acres planted.  In that year, the soybean industry generated over $300 million.  Soybeans and soybean products ranked 3rd among top agriculture exports from Kentucky and Kentucky is ranked 14th in the nation for soybean and soybean product exports.  The rising importance of the soybean industry in Kentucky highlights the need for a survey focused on pests in this system.Old World Bollworm

From 2009 to 2011 we trapped soybean fields in 9 counties in western Kentucky (the area of the state with the greatest amount of soybean acreage).  The trapping program was designed to target four moth pests:  Old World Bollworm, Silver-Y Moth, Egyptian Cotton Leafworm, and Summer Fruit Tortrix.  The traps were in the soybean fields from April/May to August/September depending on the pest.  From 2012 to 2015, we trapped for five moth pests which included the 4 listed above plus the Golden Twinspot Moth.
